Another study is being published that touts the benefits of walking as a healthy way to lose weight. According to a study by Ramblers’ Association of the UK, a brisk one-hour walk results in approximately 500 calories burned.

A specially commissioned study released by the Ramblers’ Association (RA) finds that a fast 60-minute walk covering 4.4 miles (7km) burns off about 500 calories. Now that pace is no stroll through the park but it is not race walking either.

From walking website :Grough

The results of the study were released to coincide with Get Walking Day, led by the RA’s new president, TV presenter Floella Benjamin. Ms Benjamin, a walker and marathon runner, said: “Walking is a great tonic; it keeps me fit in mind and body and really puts me in a positive mood. The more you do, the better you'll feel, even walking for half an hour five times a week makes a real difference.”

The main findings of the report, called “The effects of a one-hour brisk walk on appetite and energy intake,” were that walking for an hour uses about 480 kcal on average, and that subjects in the study did not increase their food intake in the hours following the walking.

The RA study said this demonstrates the health benefits of walking. Ramblers Scotland’s promoting walking officer Kathryn Wortley said: “The recommended 30 minutes of walking per day can even be built up in bouts of 10 or 15 minutes throughout the day, so even on the busiest of days, everyone can enjoy the health benefits of walking”.

If you are still not ready to start walking consider the following from NHS

Only three out of 10 people do enough exercise but eight out of 10 think they do:

If present habits continue, by 2010 one in four people will not fit in a standard office chair

37% of coronary heart disease deaths are related to inactivity, compared to 19% related to smoking

They will present the device at "Barrier Free 2008".

The device is designed to help people with weakened leg muscles that may be a result of aging or other reasons but are still capable of walking on their own. Although the device is a long way from going into production, it is good news for many people who may have problems walking.

The device is designed to be worn with a belt, the device weighs only about 2.8kg (a little over 6 pounds). The device comes in three sizes - small, medium and large. The medium size weighs 2.8kg. The operating time per charge is 2 hours (when operated at 4.5km/h walking which is just under 3 miles per hour).

Honda is planning to offer interested attendees an opportunity to "wear" the device at the event so that they can experience its effectiveness.

New York City is a city of walkers so you do not have to look for opportunities to walk when you are there. When I visit the city I walk an average of 3 to 5 miles per day. I know this because I take my pedometer with me and wear it at least one day of my trip. I need to walk that much since many of my trips around New York involve stopping for a slice of pizza.

I was in New York City last weekend and it was too cold for a girl from the south to spend much time walking around. I thought about what I could do for exercise that was free. I used to live in New York City and commuted through Grand Central twice a day so I was familiar with the terminal. I read that Grand Central had recently been renovated and I was curious to see it. So, I put on my walking shoes and headed on over.

Grand Central Station is large enough that you can rack up some steps walking around it, just avoid rush hour when you will be bumping into commuters rushing to get their trains. The terminal area is large and dominated by the four sided clock you have surely seen in movies. Look at the ceiling and you will see stars. The dark blue ceiling is a painting of the Mediterranean sky with 2,500 stars lit by fiber optics.

Grand Central station has restaurants, bars and shops including a very large food market where you can buy any number of snacks both healthy and unhealthy to fuel you on your walk.

Just because you are on vacation or a business trip that is no reason to stop exercising. You can always find opportunities to get a few steps in.

In early January, Meredith Emerson and her dog went for a hike on Blood Mountain in Georgia. Blood Mountain is a very popular and beautiful hiking destination in the southeastern part of the US and we all have a right to hike it either alone or with our friends.

Unfortunately for Meredith and her family there was an evil man walking the same trails that day. By kidnapping and killing Meredith he not only took Meredith’s life, he also took away the sense of peace and comfort many women find in walking alone.

Meredith did nothing wrong that day. Blood Mountain is not an isolated trail in a sparsely populated area. It is rare to walk it and not encounter several other hikers. The only thing that possibly would have saved her is if she had been accompanied by other people.

I have walked Blood Mountain many times. I have also walked the trails around Atlanta and the Chattahoochee National Park by myself or with my Golden Retriever Zoë.

Walking by yourself allows you to enjoy the quiet and reflect on things that are happening in your life. It gives you time to put things in perspective. You can enjoy the sounds of nature free from the chatter of your friends.

I will no longer hike alone; I will always make sure that I have at least one friend with me. This evil man has stolen from me and every other woman one of the few free and truly enjoyable experiences in life.

Of course, people look at me oddly since I am talking to myself while I walk. There are a bunch of free podcasts you can subscribe to at iTunes if you have an iPod.

Many sites other than iTunes also offer free and subscription based podcasts. I subscribe to the free ones and if I like them I either make a donation to that organization or if they have a higher level subscription rate that adds value I will buy that.

A new study reports that taking a walk, or participating in any exercise, can reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by up to 70%. AMD is a degenerative eye disease in which the light-sensitive cells in the back of the eye stop working. It is the leading cause of severe vision loss in people over age 60.

Researchers followed nearly 4,000 men and women in Beaver Dam, Wis., between the ages of 43 and 86 for 15 years. The participants gave information about their lifestyle and exercise habits and had eye examinations every five years.

The study shows that older adults who had an active lifestyle and exercised three or more times a week had a 70% lower risk of developing wet AMD.There are two types of AMD, wet and dry.

The study found that even low-impact workouts were beneficial. The most likely reason is that exercise maintains blood vessels and eyes need that vascular support.

The risk of age-related macular degeneration was 30% lower among people who walked more than 12 blocks regularly. A general rule of thumb is that blocks range from 1/5 of a mile to 1/20 of a mile.

Do you want to walk more? If so, then keep a step diary.

NBC nightly news reported that people who wear a pedometer walk 1 more mile on average, but only if the keep track of their steps. In fact, 20 studies have found that wearing a pedometer prods people to walk more.

In a report for the American Medical Association, Dr. Dena Bravata of Stanford University reports that increasing physical activity depended on setting a goal and keeping a diary of the number of steps walked each day. “Every night, you write down how many steps you walked that day,” she said. “By flipping back through your diary, you’re able to see patterns, for example, ’On the two days a week I took the stairs, I increased my steps.”

Dr. Bravata and her fellow researchers analyzed 20 studies from the United States and Canada and half a dozen from Japan, Europe and Australia. The average age of participants was 49, and 85 percent were female because some studies targeted women. The total number of volunteers overall was more than 2,700.

On average pedometer users increased their physical activity by about 27% which translates to about one mile more a day than before they started keeping track of their steps. A step diary was key to increasing activity levels, participants who did not do that did not significantly increase their walking. In addition, pedometer users who did not have a step goal failed to increase their physical activity.

The analysis was supported by a grant from the National Institute on Aging.

If you aren’t the type of person who will keep a diary, and most of us aren’t, take a look at the Omron HJ-720ITC Pocket Pedometer.

I have always wondered how many miles I walk in an average day while
I am on vacation. This year I took my pedometer with me to Italy and
found out that in an average day I walk about 5 miles. I felt pretty
good about the distance walked, but of that 5 miles only about 30
minutes was walked fast enough to be considered aerobic.

In other words I was strolling around the narrow streets and through beautiful churches but I was not getting a cardio workout.

As soon as I realized I was doing more meandering and less aerobic
walking I stepped up the pace, at least for part of the day. After all
I was in Italy so there was no way I was going to rush around like I do
when I am in New York City. On the other hand I was drinking a lot of
wine and eating pasta twice a day so I needed to burn some calories if
I wanted to fit in my clothes when I returned home.

I was doing a lot of walking on cobblestones which has a number of health benefits. Not least of which is you have to work to keep your balance.

Walking so much in a day explains why so many Europeans are able to
eat bread, cheese and pasta and not get fat. If I scheduled 5 miles of
walking into each day I would be able to consume more calories and that
would definitely contribute to my happiness.

So remember to bring your pedometer the next time you travel. You will get the most out of your vacation walking.

The
Via dell' Amore hiking trail in Cinque Terre, Italy runs between
Riomaggiore and Manarola. I use the term hiking trail loosely because
it is actually a paved path and is very easy to walk. It would be easy
to push a stroller or wheelchair on the path but I do not believe the
path is wheelchair accessible. To get to the Via dell' Amore you have
to walk up a series of steep stairs.

All of the trails in the Cinque Terre require a purchased ticket and
the Via dell' Amore is no exception. You can purchase 1-day, 2-day,
3-day and 7-day Cinque Terre Cards. These cards allow you to hike all of the trails in the Cinque Terre.

There are benches where you can sit and admire the view or just
watch all the people wandering by. There is a small restaurant on the
Via dell' Amore where you can get something to eat and drink. Picnic
tables with a spectacular view are located above the restaurant. You do
have to walk up a number of steps to get to the picnic area.

Although the Via dell' Amore is an easy walk, it may not be for you
if you have a fear of heights. There is a railing all along the trail,
but there is a long steep drop off from the railing to the Sea.

Not all of the trails in the Cinque Terre
are easy so don't be fooled. Just because you find the Via dell' Amore
to be a leisurely stroll does not mean you won't find some of the other
trails challenging.

For most of us this would be a totally needless sign because it
would never occur to us to actually hike in high heels. But if they
have a sign preventing it, that means that people were actually caught
hiking or more likely falling in their high heels.

I found the sign in Monterosso, one of the villages of the Cinque
Terre in Italy. Although you could walk the Via dell’ Amore in heels,
because it is paved, the other trails are fairly rugged and should be
hiked in good walking shoes or hiking boots.

Finally, Teva sandals you can wear with both hiking shorts and out
to dinner. These Teva sandals have the traditional straps you find on
Teva's but the straps look like leather (I have no idea if they are
actually made of leather or not). Because they look like leather these
Teva's can be dressed up or dressed down.

Like most Teva's, the Teva Leather 2 Sandals are waterproof, so
there is no need to worry about getting them wet whether you are
walking in the rain or hiking through puddles.

The Teva Leather 2 Sandals are perfect if you are trying to pack
light for your next walking vacation because you can wear them all day
and out for a night on the town. Not only that, your feet will feel so
good after wearing them all day you will have enough energy left for a
night on the dance floor.

The soles are made of rubber and have little bumps on them. Though I
have not tried them out on slippery surfaces, I think they will provide
enough traction to keep you from slipping on muddy hiking trails or on
cobblestone roads.

The top soles are comfortably cushy and are made of moisture-wicking
material that keeps your feet feeling dry. Anti-bacterial zinc keeps
these Teva's from smelling like dirty feet so you can stick them back
in your suitcase without having them make everything you are traveling
with smell like your feet. Just to be on the safe side I still wrap
them in a plastic bag.

I wore my old Teva's on a walking vacation to Sicily last year and I
would like to say they did not smell all that good. In fact, I almost
left them in Palermo becuase they had a very funky odor after 2 weeks
of daily wear in all kinds of weather.

I don't know if it is just because mine are new, but it feels like these Teva's have more arch support than my old Teva's.

I highly recommend these Teva's. I have always been a fan of the
comfort and durability that Teva's provide, but I have never been a fan
of the style. While you won't see these on the runways in Milan any
time soon, they are stylish enough to be worn to a restaurant in the
Piazza Navona without your having to hide your feet.

Pick up a pair of these Teva's for your next walking vacation. For more information click on the link below.

The
Chinese Garden in Portland, Oregon is a beautiful place for a walk. It
is especially beautiful in the rain and that is important since chances
are it will be raining when you visit.

You will not burn a lot of calories walking around the Chinese
Garden because you will not be walking very far. But, you will burn
more calories than you would sitting at a coffee shop watching the rain
fall on all of the Oregonians who seem oblivious to weather.

The garden takes up one city block which is about 40,000 square
feet. You are free to walk around the Chinese garden as many times as
you want so you can get some exercise in. But when you visit the garden
make sure you take some time to sit and enjoy the peace and serenity
that the garden offers in a big city. It is so quiet in the garden that
you will forget where you are.

Pagodas, covered walkways, bridges and a teahouse are built around a
small lake. You can sit in the teahouse and sip authentic Chinese tea
and view the garden. Snacks are available in the teahouse.

Suzhou gardens, like the one in Portland, are enclosed within city
walls and were built in areas with a limited amount of space. Because
of space limitations it was necessary to devise ways to make the garden
appear larger than it really was. This was accomplished by including
walkways and bridges which require guests to take more steps to go from
one end to the other, dividing the overall area into smaller gardens
within gardens.

Most of the materials used in the construction of the garden
originated in China including the rocks and wood. The rocks are
limestone mined from Lake Tai and are prized for their virtues
including having holes that are believed to allow life force to flow
freely

The windows around the Garden and inside the walls, are called
“leak” windows since they allow the visitor to see the view “leaking”
through.

The majority of the plants in the Garden are indigenous to China;
however, they were grown in the United States. Current import bans
prevent plants from being brought directly from China. Prior to these
recent bans, plants were brought from China to the US and their
offspring are what you will see in the garden. Some plants are more
than 100 years old and were transplanted from gardens and nurseries in
Oregon.

The Chinese Garden
in Portland, Oregon is easily accessible by public transportation and
is an easy walk from most of the hotels in the downtown area.
Appropriately the Chinese Garden is located in Chinatown.
